Important points for significant figures

  1. Significant figures are a number of digits used to express a certain quantity with precision
  2. All the digits 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9 are significant figures.
  3. Zeros are significant if they occur between the figures in point 2.
  4. Zeros used to locate the decimal point are insignificant.
  5. Zeros at the end of decimals and whole numbers are significant if they meet the required condition.
    For example If some amount is given in Rupees (24.50) and the Paisa is important then the digit 0 after 5 is important as there are 100 paisa in one rupee.

Addition and subtraction

Convert all the numbers to the number with same degree of precision as the number with least precision. Add or subtract. The result also has the precision as the least precise number.

Multiplication and division

Multiply or divide and convert the number to the number with least precision.
